  1. An empirical and ethical analysis of factors motivating managers' merger decisions.Francis K. Achampong & Wold Zemedkun - 1995 - Journal of Business Ethics 14 (10):855 - 865.
This paper examines the role of managerial self-interest in the merger market. It looks at factors influencing managers'' merger decisions by analyzing managerial expense preference factors on cross-sectional data employing non-parametric statistical methods. The same factors are examined for acquiring, acquired, and merging firms, and control groups used in each case. The results support the authors'' contention that managerial discretion is a significant motivating factor for mergers. The changes in expense preference factors indicate management decisions which provide conditions allowing management (...)

Materialism, Minds, and Cartesian Dualism.Robert Francis Almeder - 2022 - Lanham: Hamilton Books.
The book takes well-established, scientific evidence on consciousness to interrogate, and re envisions questions of personal reincarnation and thus of the mind/body problem. Methodologically, the basis of the book is rooted in the careful argumentation and logical appraisal of classical materialism and the history of the mind-body problem.

Deepening transparency about value-laden assumptions in energy and environmental modelling: improving best practices for both modellers and non-modellers.Mark Budolfson, John Bistline & Blake Francis - 2020 - Climate Policy 20.
Transparency and openness are broadly endorsed in energy and environmental modelling and analysis, but too little attention is given to the transparency of value-laden assumptions. Current practices for transparency focus on making model source code and data available, documenting key equations and parameter values, and ensuring replicability of results. We argue that, even when followed, these guidelines are insufficient for achieving deep transparency, in the sense that results often remain driven by implicit value-laden assumptions that are opaque to other modellers (...)

    Problematic of Kant's determinants of practical reason.Francis O'Farrell - 1985 - Gregorianum 66 (2):269-293.
In opposition to Aristotle, for whom practical reason differs from theoretical reason solely in the end toward which it directs its theoretical knowledge, Kant means by practical reason the capacity to determine an act unconditionally, that is, freely. Since the Kantian doctrine of determinants is based on a conception of mutual relation between practical reason and volition, this study traces the development, progressive clarification, and precise result of his thought from the Grundlegung zur Metaphysik der Sitten to the Metaphysik der (...)

The end of the Cold War encourages new perspectives on international relations. Beer and Hariman provide a comprehensive set of essays that challenge and reinterpret the tradition of realism which has dominated the thinking of academics and foreign policy makers. Post-Realism: The Rhetorical Turn in International Relations systematically discusses the major realist writers of the Post-War era, the foundational concepts of international politics, and representative case studies of foreign policy discourse. These essays demonstrate how realism operates rhetorically and point the (...)

This paper examines the prospects for global order in an environment of globalization. It analyzes the current practice in which globalization crystallizes in the universalization of Western cultural values, and identifies in this practice, a major source of all the conflicts currently plaguing the contemporary world. It argues that acts of terrorism and other similar acts are reactions to the perceived injustices of the present globalization phenomenon. This paper studies these crises because of their cultural underpinnings.Drawing on the postmodernist philosophy, (...)

The Pursuit of Reason.Charles Francis Keary - 1910 - Cambridge University Press.
Originally published in 1910, this is a volume of philosophy by an author who found his main calling in the creation of novels, Charles Francis Keary. Unusual in its relatively personal exploration of ideas, together with its accessible, literary style, the text nonetheless maintains an academically rigorous approach to its exploration of the boundaries of reason. The fundamental premise is that mental processes generally thought to be based on intuition can, more accurately, be seen to find their basis in (...)

  47. A General Theory of Political Domination.Francis N. Lovett - 2004 - Dissertation, Columbia University
In all societies, past and present, one can find social relationships marked by political domination. Properly understood, domination is a great evil, the suffering of which ought to be minimized so far as possible. This being so, it stands to reason that political and social theorists would have attempted a general analysis of the concept of domination. Surprisingly, however, this is not the case. General accounts of political domination are few and far between; even among those that can be found, (...)
